APPLYING LIFEGUARD POOL PAINT TS-710 - 720 - 730
- 740
This
application instruction sheet has been prepared for use with all Life
Guard Pool Paint products. Please read this document in its entirety
before proceeding. Never paint below 50F or above 85F in hot direct
sunlight or when the possibility of rain is in the forecast. New
concrete and masonry surfaces should be allowed to cure a minimum of
thirty days before application. Avoid
applying epoxy paint over rubber based paint and visa versa. The
exception is Silicone Epoxy Pool Paint which may be applied over epoxy,
rubber, alkyd or acrylic pool paints. Our product performance guaranty
is void when our products are not applied according to label directions,
application instructions and standard industry practices!
1.
Preparation.
Begin by draining the
pool or pond, removing all loose debris. When preexisting paint
is present your first step should be to
establish what type of paint has been used and how many coats are
present. The best way to determine how many coats of paint are present
is to remove a chunk of the old coating with a knife blade and count the
layers of old paint. When four or more layers of old paint are present
stripping is not only required by the paint manufacturer but a industry
standard. Select and purchase your repair and pool refinishing materials
including paint. Best results will be obtained by applying primer with
two coats of pool paint. Allow the surface to dry thoroughly before
making repairs.
2. Make your repairs.
Begin by power-washing all pool surfaces
thoroughly. Inspect the entire surface carefully to locate
areas in need of repair. Tap the surface with a ball peen hammer at
regular intervals. When tapped with the hammer unsound area will sound
differently than sound areas. Mark any unsound areas with a marking pen
for easy identification. When selecting your repair materials be sure to
choose submersible and paintable calking, fillers and patching
materials. When cracks are present they must be cut out with a diamond
blade saw or grinder. Cut the cracks out a minimum of 1/4” deep and ¼”
wide. Chip out any divots or loose cement. Fill or caulk the cracks and
divots. Larger repairs should be filled with hydraulic cement according
to manufacturer directions. For best results sand the entire surface to
be painted with 150 grit sandpaper or the equivalent. Clean up all loose
debris and rinse or power-wash once more.
3. Clean.
While still wet follow up by cleaning with an etching cleaner. We
recommend TS-695 Etching Cleaner which includes phosphoric acid. TS-695
Etching Cleaner achieves results equal to muriatic acid, however it is
considerably easer to use and safe in the drains and flower beds.
Etching Cleaner performs a multitude of services including removing
leaching lime, contaminates, grease, oil and corrects the Ph. It also
opens the concrete pores to receive paint greatly improving the bond. It
is very easy to use, safe and effective. Some recommend TSP (Tri Sodium
Phosphate), however, detergents including TSP can inhibit the adhesion
of paint when not completely removed so if you use it be sure to rinse
carefully and thoroughly, preferably with a power washer before moving
on. Apply TS-695 Etching Cleaner according to label directions and rinse
thoroughly. Repeat this step when evidence of stubborn oil, stains or
wax is evident. All
Rinse the
entire swimming pool, skimmers, fittings, lights, and stairs
completely.
4. Schedule your project carefully.
All surfaces to be painted or repaired must be allowed to dry thoroughly
before application. A simple Do-It-Yourself moisture test is to take a
rubber floor mat out of your car and place it on the surface to be
painted. Leave it there for 8-12 hours. When removed there should be no
evidence of moisture on the mat or on the surface. Wait until there is
no sign of moisture before moving forward. As necessary tape
off the tile band, lights and fittings with masking tape to prevent
unwanted paint on lights, threads, tile or fittings. Check the weather
report carefully for rain, high humidity or high winds. When there is a
chance of rain, you will want to wait until the forecast allows
sufficient low humidity, clear, dry warm weather to prime or paint.
Do not apply repair material, primer or paint to wet surfaces. Our
product performance guaranty and warranty are void when Life Guard Pool
Paint Products are applied when surfaces are applied to wet surfaces or
when rain or high humidity corrupts the uncured finish. We recommend
allowing a minimum of 48 hours to dry after cleaning before moving
forward.
5. Select the right primer and sundries.
For best results apply one coat of
the recommended Life Guard Primer. Bare concrete, steel, aluminum,
fiberglass, plastic, vinyl, plaster and Gunnite will require TS-664
Etching Primer or TS-6390 Ever-Last Epoxy Primer. These products may be
sprayed, however, best results are achieved by roller coat. Typically
the edges are brushed and the rest is roller coated. On smooth surfaces
we recommend 3/8” non-shedding wool roller covers. Increase the roller
nap as needed on more heavily textured surfaces.
6. Applying Primer.
Carefully schedule your primer and paint schedule. Prime or paint only
after the dew has lifted and before the temperature
reaches 85F. Do not apply paint if the temperature is below 50 For above
85F. Apply primer evenly avoiding heavy
build up and not in hot direct sunlight. Typically only one coat is
required, however, multiple coats may be applied according to individual
requirements. Sanding between coats is required if not recoated with in
48 hours. Read and follow primer label directions implicitly.
7.
Applying Paint. Life Guard Pool Paint products are sprayable
or may be brushed or rolled. Film build is better with roll coat
applications, which is usually preferable. Brush the edges, fittings and
hard to reach areas then roll coat the remainder. Apply evenly and
quickly always keeping a wet edge which prevents overlap marks. More
than one painter may be necessary to keep a wet edge. Apply evenly
avoiding ponding or heavy build up. Allow 24 hours or more for the first
coat to dry then apply the second coat. Apply subsequent coats of paint
following previously stated instructions within 48 hours or sand between
coats.
8. Dry
and Cure Time.
Allow a full 7 days before filling your refinished pool.
Life Guard Pool Paint Products must be allowed to dry and cure
completely before filling with water. When unscheduled rain wets the
painted surface before 7 days remove standing water using a sponge or
mop. Use a leaf blower to dry the uncured painted surface. Add two days
to the total cure time which will allow for an acceptable cure before
filling. Fill the pool without stopping until the pool is full.
Restart the pool filtration system once the pool has been completely
filled. Adjust the total alkalinity and calcium hardness levels to a
minimum of 150 PPM. Resume your normal chemical maintenance program.
Life Guard
Pool Paint Products are guaranteed to adhere to properly prepared
surfaces, withstand pool chemicals and constant submersion service for
7-10 years when properly maintained according to industry standards,
label directions and all manufacturers written and verbal
recommendations. Temperatures above 85F or high humidity conditions may
cause mud cracking or bubbling. Do not paint in hot or intense direct
sunlight. Heavy wear may require a maintenance coat reapplication. We
hope this information helps you achieve the results you expect and
provides years of problem free service. Contact us for further
